Implanté à Giverny, l’ancien hôtel restaurant BAUDY a été un lieu de passage célèbre pour de nombreux peintres français et américains. Considéré aujourd’hui comme une réelle source d’inspiration pour les peintres amateurs et professionnels, l’établissement se situe idéalement à 5 minutes des musées Claude Monet et de l’Impressionnisme.
A l’origine, le restaurant était une épicerie buvette tenue en 1883 par Angélina et Gaston Baudy. Elle devint un restaurant pour y accueillir l’afflux de peintres et autres visiteurs. Le lieu s’agrandit ensuite et devient un hôtel restaurant. Dans ce lieu devenu historique les peintres venaient aussi s’exercer à la peinture dans les ateliers et les jardins. Claude Monet venait y converser avec son ami Georges Clémenceau.
Located in Giverny, the former BAUDY Hotel was a famous place for many French and American painters. Considered today as a real source of inspiration for amateurs and professionals painters, the establishment is ideally located 5 minutes from the Claude Monet and Impressionism museums.
The restaurant was originally a convenience store built in 1883 by Angélina and Gaston Baudy. It became a restaurant to accommodate the influx of painters and other visitors. The place then expands and became a hotel restaurant. In this historic place the painters also came to practice painting in the workshops and gardens. Claude Monet came there to converse with his friend Georges Clémenceau.
L’atelier de peinture situé dans la cour est visible de nos jours. Il a été construit en 1887. Il nous permet de comprendre les conditions matérielles des peintres d’antan. Il est un lieu historique fréquenté à leur époque par Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, etc. Un autre atelier situé à l’étage du restaurant était également fréquenté par les peintres. Il offrait des conditions optimales de luminosité nécessaire à la peinture. Il est actuellement non accessible au public.

Le peintre américan William Metcalf a fréquenté l’hôtel restaurant Baudy, surnommé « l’hôtel des peintres américains ». Il a étudié la peinture impressionniste aux côtés de Claude Monet.
John Singer Sargant est l’auteur d’un tableau représentant Monet peignant en plein air, en compagnie de sa nouvelle épouse : « Claude Monet paignant au bord d'un bois» 1885.
The american painter William Metcalf attended the Baudy Hotel restaurant, known as the American Painters Hotel. He studied Impressionist painting alongside Claude Monet.
John Singer Sargant is the author of a painting depicting Monet painting outdoors, in the company of his new wife: «Claude Monet Painting by the Edge of a Wood» 1885.
